Pomegranate

California Florida Plant Company now has two pomegranate varieties available for growers and the retail market. For growers, pomegranates have been a winner in many respects. The trees grow quickly after transplant, coming into production within three-four years. They tolerate (even thrive) in poor soils and under adverse water quality. They don’t get unruly with growth, so they don’t require extensive pruning.

Angel Red – New Pomegranate Variety Transplants Available

California Florida Plant Company recently began propagating a new pomegranate variety for growers interested in trying an exciting new variety, Angel Red. Exciting is a mild adjective for this superlative variety. It has every quality a grower could want.

• Greater juice content than any other variety
• Uniform size and a bright red color
• Early maturity
• Soft seeds make for delicious eating
• Trees bear heavily

The variety Angel Red (PP# 16,578), patented by grower Greg Smith, is currently having the DNA blueprint established. CFPC has been working with this variety since 2007.

Wonderful — an older variety nicknamed for its rich, wonderful flavor

WONDERFUL has a perfect red skin, big ruby -red juicy seeds and is very popular because of its rich flavor. It is the leading commercial pomegranate variety in California. Wonderful originated in Florida and was first propagated in California in 1896. Seeds not very hard. But it’s better for juicing than for eating out of hand. Plant is vigorous and productive.
